You see this picture
And notice the octane ratings first...
EDIT: high altitude requires less of an octane rating for normal functioning. Googling the lottery tickets leads me to believe this is from Idaho.

85? What backwards hell-hole is this?
![]() 01/29/2014 at 15:59 |

Ew, is this in Iowa or something? I don't see a 93. . .
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:01 |

Utah is my guess.

85 octane probably only works with cars that have unhealthy compression. Well, I don't know. But its weak.

85 and then 88?!
WHAT THE FUCK?
..
..
...
..
(P.S. more clearly a jalop when it pisses you off this much)

What the shit is 88?
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:02 |

Seems like octane ratings I saw in El Paso, TX.
So it's either high altitude or weird.

Woohoo, I pass the test.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:06 |

What sort of hell is this? 85 octane? 88 octane? If that's not 94 on the right octane I'll be pissed.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:06 |

High altitude for sure.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:06 |

It might be Colorado, since they have 85 octane.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:06 |

Colorado doesn't have 93. It makes me sad.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:07 |

Ten bucks it isn't. High altitude = less oxygen = lower required octane. Could be somewhere like colorado.

Noticed it had Diesel and Gas pumps, then Octane ratings, then prices, then something odd taped to the pumps, then the lotto tix, then the text at top. In that order.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:12 |

Colorado hits both then.

Here in Indiana we are well supplied in 93 octane and E85. I might run a few tanks of E85 for fun. MUHAHAHAHAHA

What if I noticed the diesel button first?

In 19 years of living in Colorado I've never seen 85 octane. Might be up in the mountains somewhere but either way, it shouldn't exist. Potentially Durango. Nobody likes Durango.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:16 |

Oh we've got E85 out the ass in Colorado, not much in Michigan though. However! Every station in Michigan (that I've seen) has 93, and some closer to Detroit (I believe most Mobile One's) run 94 octane. Because abandoned city race car?
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:18 |

I wish we were like Europe, they have 98 octane over there. So beautiful :')
I have never heard of people running 94 here, either that or I am just ignant.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:25 |

What would be the result of using high octane fuel at high altitudes? Would it increase performance? Or would the car suffer from it?

I didn't think I was a jalop anymore since I stopped posting on Oppo when pictures stopped working, but now that Kinja is broken again, pictures are working!
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:29 |

They have different octane ratings over there. If I recall correctly their 98 octane is very similar to our 93 octane.
94 doesn't really hold that big a difference from 93. Smells magical though.

Europe uses a slightly different octane rating system than we do. I believe they only use the Research Octane Number which is generally a little higher where we use (RON+MON)/2 where MON is Motor Octane Number and generally is a little lower. The tests to determine RON and MON are slightly different and that is why they yield different numbers.
Allow me to drop some Wikipedia on you.

You kids and your new-fangled octanes. When I was growing up we had to choose between unleaded and regular.

thats most likely a fred meyer pump. Also its probably in eastern idaho, because that side of the state is literally a shithole.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:32 |

So basically the high and mighty Europeans were just saying their gas was better because it had a higher number. Those motherfuckers.
Race fuel smells even better. Every time I am at a racetrack or autocross it smells awesome, better when it has been exploded.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:34 |
|
So we all use the same fuel?
![]() 01/29/2014 at 16:39 |
|
Probably not, I don't know what kind of mandatory additive packages and fuel blends there are in Europe. But yeah, their 98 octane is probably damn near the same as our 93 or 94. From Wikipedia the MON is generally about 10 points lower than RON, so our rating will be roughly 5 points lower than Euro fuel.

In NM, Loves truck stops sells 85 octane regular. Bypass Loves.

Is it any wonder? He shows up just as the party's getting started and he always wore that goofy scarf.

Most likely Idaho, definitely not Utah because of the lottery tickets.
The real kick on the pills, we pay the same relative prices (ie. reg, plus, prem) as everyone else but get shittier gas for the money.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 18:21 |

That is so not ok.
![]() 01/29/2014 at 18:21 |

Couldn't agree more. It's a beautiful thing.

Fuck I wish I was paying only $3.38 for gas. That's over $1 less than I'm paying right now!

Sad but true. hahaha
![]() 01/30/2014 at 17:46 |

Wait what? this was a test? I didn't get time to study.

Yeah, but the answer comes naturally, no studying required.
